Kids 4 Kids
The Maine Kids 4 Kids program was started in 2007 to help increase the interest in Boer goat among the youth in
Last year we awarded 6 goats. This year we will be having some kids being donated back into the program from our 1st year recipients. There have been a few of the goats that have not been bred in time for this upcoming year. Also, we have had two does already kid that had bucks. This year we have 12!!!!!!!
I realize that in the beginning, we were hoping that the program could be self sufficient this year, but I would still like to ask anyone that can if they could please donate just one young doe kid. They can be percentage or full bloods. We are not asking for you to donate your very best kids; however we are asking that the donated goats adhere to ABGA standards, with no disqualifying traits. The youth are required to show these animals and it is extremely necessary for the goats to meet show standards. Also, as breeders, each goat donated is a representation of your farm. Therefore they should be of good quality. If you have any questions regarding this rule please feel free to contact me. For planning purposes I would appreciate a response as soon as you can.
As a reminder, this program was started in order to help generate more interest in Boer goats among the youth. There are a few stipulations and requirements. The child must have adequate shelter for the goat, be capable of providing daily care. The child must attend at least one of our 4 sanctioned shows during the first year.
They also must have the doe bred once she reaches breeding age and then donate the first female offspring produced back into the program to be donated to another child. After all requirements are met the goat is the child’s, to do with what he or she would like. If for some reason, after the child receives the goat, they can no longer have or take care of the goat, the child is required to give the goat back to whoever donated it to either keep themselves or donate to the Jr BGBM.
Prior to this program we had not been able to hold a youth show due to lack of numbers. It was fantastic to see the amount of children show up and actively participate in our youth activities last summer. We now have approximately 24 youth that are members of the Jr BGBM. They all have some great ideas and plans for the upcoming year. None of this would have been possible without, YOU, the breeders.
All donated goats will be required to have all vaccinations prior to the children receiving them. Also we will need an individual application for registration for each donated goat. We do ask that you complete your farm prefix but leave the rest of the name blank so the children can name their own goats. All donated goats will be awarded in May at the Northeast Livestock Expo.
The youth of today are the breeders of tomorrow!!
